Lauren’s Story

Densel Fleming had been a March of Dimes volunteer for 16 years before his daughter, Lauren, was born 3 1/2 months early on February 2, 2004, weighing only 2 pounds, 1 ounce. He and his wife, Nikki, of Marvin, North Carolina, never could have imagined what it would be like to have a baby in newborn intensive care for 5 months.  Lauren was treated for respiratory distress and underwent multiple surgeries related to a damaged vocal cord and a heart defect.

Doctors prepared the Flemings for the worst, Densel says, but “Lauren did everything doctors said she wouldn’t be able to do – like cry and breathe on her own. I knew she was saying to me, if I’m willing to fight, then, Daddy, you better be man enough to fight as well.”

Today, Lauren is a warm and loving 6-year-old who makes friends easily and loves to dance, draw, create storybooks and read. The Flemings are grateful for the March of Dimes reasearch and treatment that helped Lauren beat the odds and helped their other two children, Erin and Corbin, be born healthy.

As the 2011 National Ambassador, Lauren and her family will travel the country to share her inspiring story, help raise awareness of premature birth and encourage families and companies to walk with them in March for Babies.

My baby Miracle was born March 31, 2010, 4 mths early. They said she wasn’t going to live, she spent just over 3 mths in the nicu. Now she’s about to have her 1st b-day. It’s wonderful to hear that things are going good for Lauren. Her story lets me know that things work out the way they are supposed to no matter what the drs say.

It is so wonderful to hear stories like yours Sharica! I have also heard stories and shared tears with families that lost their babies and it is absolutely heartbreaking. I am so honored and grateful to represent and serve an organization that serves countless others, especially some of our most vunerable citizens – children. Many blessings to you and your little girl who is now a year-old. When you have a preemie, celebrating their 1st birthday is a miracle in and of itself because many preemies don’t make it to their first birthday. What a wonderful story – you made my day, dear! Hugs to you~
